Me in Conversation with Craft Council

I'm not sure if I've written this before but I feel like I've recently woken up from my 'motherhood sleep mode' and since waking up I have been more active on social media and the different channels I use. The kids are only 7 and 9.5 years old, so they still need me a lot of the time! But something in me shifted, I'm not sure I can explain it just yet but it feels right for now and I hope it lasts.

One of the channels I've been more active on is my profile on Craft Council, I have been a member on there for a while, but it's only recently that I've been updating it and posting more. Luckily for me they noticed and we had a lovely interview a couple of weeks ago.

The original interview is on their Instagram page, I'm copying it here for you to read:

We caught up with designer and Craft Council member Yaarit Mechany to find out more about what inspires her work and why she chooses to works with reclaimed objects.

❓Can you tell us about what informs and inspires your work?
"I find a lot of inspiration in vintage and antique objects. I am drawn to heavily decorated items, ones that have a richness of detail. Part of what I'm drawn to is the fact that old items have a history in them, they carry different moments in time, signifying different styles, fashions, modes. They are a reminder of what the world used to be like when they were made."

❓What is it you like about working with reclaimed objects?
"I enjoy the process as a whole, from the starting point of searching for and collecting the items, through to the challenge of combining different shapes and patterns together and to the final stage of sculpting them into one harmonious object. I feel great satisfaction in giving old products new life, and I hope that by doing that I have extended their cycle in the world."

❓Can you tell us a bit more about why you make?
"I suppose we should always question why we make new products, particularly in today’s world and I think that 'how you make' should become an equally important question. Personally, I need to create, I find something deeply therapeutic in the process. When I design I search for beauty and wish to create items that will last forever. I also hope that I will always keep that ‘how’ in mind."
